What Are Clear Aligners & How Do They Work?

Invisalign® Clear Aligners in Gilbert, AZ before and afterInvisalign® and Angel Aligners are orthodontic systems that use a series of clear teeth aligners to gradually straighten teeth. These discreet invisible aligners are custom made to fit comfortably over teeth and should be worn throughout the day and night. Even so, the clear aligners are also removable for more enjoyable mealtimes and effective brushing and flossing.

Using digital imaging technology, Dr. Vohra will scan your mouth in order to make multiple sets of clear braces that are designed to be swapped out every week. Each pair is specially customized to move your teeth in a more correct and aligned position as your treatment progresses. Unless instructed otherwise, you will return to our local Gilbert dental office during treatment so that our orthodontist can track your progress and make any necessary adjustments.

If you suffer from the following orthodontic conditions, you could be a great candidate for Clear Aligners:

  • Crooked Teeth
  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Crossbites
  • Gaps Between Teeth
  • Open Bites
  • Crowded Teeth

Your Consultation With Our Orthodontist

During your consultation, our clear aligner orthodontist, Dr. Vohra, will carefully examine your teeth and jaw using digital x-rays and imaging technologies to determine a correct diagnosis.

If you and Dr. Vohra decide that clear aligners are right for you, she will take digital scans of your teeth and use those digital scans to develop your treatment plan.

Generally speaking, most patients with mild-to-moderate misalignment are candidates for Invisalign or Angel Aligners. That being said, if Dr. Vohra discovers a more severe orthodontic issue, she may recommend traditional orthodontics to straighten your teeth instead.

Tips for Clear Aligner Success

Clear aligners are highly effective when worn correctly. Here's what makes the difference:

  • Wear your trays 20–22 hours per day. Remove them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush and floss.
  • Clean your trays daily. Rinse them every time you remove them and brush them gently with a soft toothbrush.
  • Don't skip trays or rush ahead. Each tray is doing specific work, follow Dr. Vohra's prescribed schedule.
  • Brush and floss before reinserting. Food and bacteria trapped under trays can cause cavities.
  • Use your aligner case. Trays left on a napkin or table are frequently lost or accidentally thrown away.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does clear aligner treatment take? Most adults with mild to moderate alignment issues complete treatment in 12–18 months. Cases vary, simpler corrections can be done in as little as 6–9 months, while more involved cases may take longer. Dr. Vohra will give you a personalized estimate at your free consultation.

How many hours a day do I need to wear my aligners? Clear aligners need to be worn 20–22 hours per day to work on schedule. They should only be removed to eat, drink (anything other than water), and perform oral hygiene. Consistently under-wearing your trays will extend your treatment timeline.

Do clear aligners hurt? Most patients experience mild pressure or soreness for 1–2 days when switching to a new tray. This is normal, it means the teeth are moving. Discomfort is generally much less than what patients experience with braces adjustments. Over-the-counter pain relievers help if needed.

Can teens use clear aligners? Yes. Clear aligners are a great option for teens who are responsible about wearing them consistently. Dr. Vohra will evaluate maturity and compliance factors during the consultation to help determine if aligners or braces are the better fit for a younger patient.

Will clear aligners affect my speech? Some patients notice a slight lisp for the first few days as their tongue adjusts to the trays. This typically resolves on its own within a week as you get used to speaking with them in.

Can I eat and drink with aligners in? You should remove your aligners to eat any food and to drink anything other than plain water. Hot drinks can warp the trays, and eating with them in can damage them or trap food and bacteria against your teeth.

What happens after treatment is complete? Once your teeth have reached their final position, Dr. Vohra will fit you with a retainer. Wearing your retainer as directed is essential, teeth can shift back without it. Most patients transition to nighttime-only retainer wear after an initial period of full-time use.

Do you accept Invisalign transfer patients? Yes. If you started Invisalign treatment with another provider and have relocated to the Gilbert or Chandler area, we welcome you as a transfer patient. Call or text us at (480) 926-4498 and we'll walk you through what we need to get started.
